Hanging Rock is the most famous and iconic attraction in the local area, and the reason why so many people choose to visit this part of the world. Also known as Mount Diogenes or Dryden's Rock, Hanging Rock holds an important spiritual place for Aboriginal people and is also famous as the setting of Joan Lindsay's novel - as well as the classic movie, and recent TV series - Picnic at Hanging Rock. This distinctive rock formation was a former volcano, with the unique geological properties of the area continuing to attract visitors from across Australia and the world.

Mt Macedon is another popular area close to Woodend, with Oak Hill situated on the northern slopes of the Macedon Ranges. Just over 1,000 metres high, Mt Macedon is known as Geboor or Geburrh by the Wurundjeri tribe. At the base of Mount Macedon is an ancient axe-grinding site that has been used by local Aboriginal people for thousands of years. If you're feeling brave, the view from the summit is spectacular, including Melbourne city, the Dandenong Ranges, and the You Yangs.

There is lots to explore close to Oak Hill, from Woodend itself to the many surrounding towns and villages. If you want to venture a little further afield, Kyneton is just up the road, Trentham is only 15 minutes away, and the spa towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are just over half an hour by car. These resort towns are located right in the middle of the largest concentration of mineral springs in Australia. Whether you want to relax, explore, or relax some more, Oak Hill and the surrounding area have something for everyone to enjoy.

An old Italian farm with restaurants and coffee places and a fabulous garden. (Just out of Hepburn Springs.)
Of course for the more adventurous both Bendigo and Ballarat are also reachable in just over an hour and are well worth the drive.

If you have any questions about places to go, or anything else, please feel free to ask your host Rhonda who will be more than happy to assist. She has lived in this region for many years.
